The purpose of the Society is to promote public awareness of the Battle of Hobkirk’s Hill.

Members are asked to:

-         Be members of the Kershaw County Historical Society, our parent organization

-         Help educate others of the significance of the Battle

-       Fly the Betsy Ross flag during the Battle of Hobkirk’s Hill Week (April 19th  through the 25th – the week General Greene and his troops were in town)

Need a flag? The Kershaw County Historical Society offers a sewn flag (the stripes are red and white fabric) with embroidered stars for $35.00. These are available during normal business hours at Miller Lumber Co. on York Street.

Is it appropriate to fly a flag that has fewer than 50 stars?
Yes. Official United States flags are always considered living, active flags. From the Betsy Ross flag to the present 50-star flag, any flag that at some time was the currently active flag is still considered a living flag to be accorded all due respect.

If you wish to be considered a member, or you have questions, contact us at hhsociety@camden.net.

Is it Battle of Hobkirk Hill or Hobkirk’s Hill?

Read the "Account of the Battle of Hobkirk's Hill", by Samuel Mathis, the first white male born in Camden, and the brother-in-law of Joseph Kershaw. This account was published by the Kershaw County Historical Society in 1961. It was from a letter from Mathis to Gen. Wm. Davie. Errors in spelling, punctuation, or grammer may have been made by either Mathis himself or by one of the later transcribers.
